Handmade Nursery Wall Art Part IV : Elephant

This is the final one in the series of Nursery Wall Arts with jungle theme. Its also my favorite.

Following are the supplies I used for this project:
- Foam Sheets( black, white, yellow, orange, green, red and blue)
- Card Stock or any thick paper : brown
(brown foam sheets are preferred but I did not have them)
- Wiggle eyes
- Craft knife
- Glue and Scissors
- Scrapbook Sheets for background

Sketch the pattern or take a printout if you have one available with you. A good place to get inspired for patterns is baby bedding collection. I sketched the elephant and cut out the face body and ears using black foam.

I used white foam for paws , tooth and inside ears. Then just glued the pieces together and added wiggle eyes to get the cutest elephant. You can stop here.

Or to have more fun, add water using blue foam sheets. I also added rocks on the river side using brown paper. A shining sun and chirping birds made the scenery complete.
I hope you liked the series on nursery decoration and would try these or get inspired to make something of your own. Happy decorating!

Handmade Nursery Wall Art Part III : Monkey having fun

Here is the third one in the series of nursery wall art with jungle theme for a baby boy.

Following are the supplies I used for this project:
- Foam Sheets( yellow, orange, green, red and blue)
- Card Stock or any thick paper : brown
(brown foam sheets are preferred but I did not have them)
- Wiggle eyes
- Craft knife
- Glue and Scissors
- Scrapbook Sheets for background

I sketched the pattern for a monkey hanging from a tree. You can use a ready made pattern if you have one. I did not have brown foam sheets so I used card stock for the body. For monkey's face and tummy I used orange foam. Add wiggle eyes and draw the nose and mouth using a permanent marker. The main piece of the project is ready.

I used the same background as in previous ones of the series. Refer my previous posts on instructions to make it. Added a tree and some flowers to complete the look. I used paper punch to punch out circles from foam sheets to make flowers. An adorable wall art is ready to bring smile on your baby's face and yours.

Handmade Nursery Wall Art Part-II : Lion

This is the second one in the series of Nursery Wall Decor with jungle theme. Now no jungle is complete without a cute lion :). Following are the supplies I used for this project:

- Foam Sheets( yellow, orange, green)
- Card Stock or any thick paper : brown
(brown foam sheets are preferred but I did not have them)
- Wiggle eyes
- Craft knife
- Glue and Scissors
- Scrapbook Sheets for background

I sketched the pattern for lion. Using craft knife I cut out lion's beard and paws from orange foam sheet and the body and face from yellow foam sheet. I glued the wiggle eyes and added the smile using a permanent marker. Then I glued the various cut outs together to make the lion. You can stop here and use it as is for decorating the nursery.

I added a tree using the brown card stock and cut out leaves from green foam sheet. Refer my previous post for making the background for the project.

Arrange the tree and lion on the background sheet. I also added some grass using green foam sheet to complete the look. The king of jungle never looked so adorable :).

Handmade Nursery Wall Art Part - I: Giraffe

When you are living in a rented apartment there is not much you can do when it comes to decorating your baby's nursery.

The most common way to decorate a nursery is to paint but that is not allowed in most of the apartments.

This is part one of a series of nursery wall arts for a baby boy nursery with jungle theme (could be for girls too :)). The project does not involve sticking on walls or painting them so is apartment friendly. If your baby is going to have elder siblings you can involve them in the project too.

Supplies needed for the project:
- Foam Sheets( yellow, orange, green, red)
- Wiggle eyes( I did not have one of desired size so used black and white foam)
- Craft knife
- Glue and Scissors
- Scrapbook Sheets or thick paper with printed pattern for background

At first I sketched the Giraffe outline on a paper. You may use ready made pattern if you have one. Then using a craft knife I cut out the Giraffe out of orange foam sheet. You can use scissors but its neater with a craft knife.

Then I cut out hexagons of different sizes using the yellow foam sheet and glued them on the body to get the pattern on Giraffe's body. Added eyes and mouth to the face and paws ( using yellow foam sheets) to the feet to complete the giraffe.

Now that the main piece is ready, I had to decide on a background. I used two sheets of patterned scrapbook stack, cut them in a curve in the center and attached the two to make the following background for my project.
The borders are also cut out from a thick paper sheet with stripes as pattern. I plan to use the same background for all my nursery wall art projects for an integrated look. You can simply glue the Giraffe to the background and stop there but that wouldn't be much fun.

To finish my project I added bushes cut out from green foam sheet and a flower in Giraffe's mouth. Its difficult to cut small shapes in foam. To make the flower I used a single hole paper punch to punch out red foam sheet. That's it! A beautiful and unique nursery decoration piece is ready. You can add ribbons to hang it on the wall or just use thumb tacks. Stay tuned for more!

Quick Framed Art

When I bought bedding set for my newborn I found that the set includes Valance which I could not use as I live in an apartment and it has huge windows so it won't fit anyways.
The whole bedding set was utilized optimally except this valance. As my baby grew a bit older and started looking at things close by with great interest I realized since the valance has great embroidered patch work of Lion and Elephant it will make great wall pieces and will interest my daughter a lot if place on the wall.

Quickly I cut out two separate pieces one each of that of lion and the elephant embroidery. After measuring the size of the final art piece with a measuring tape I kept about 1.5 inches on all four sides and cut out two cardboard pieces. I used the box of a recently bought toy for her.
The next step was to cutout strips of self adhesive foam sheets.

I selected fluorescent green as that was the base colour of the bedding set and seemed to go well with the design. I had bought these foam sheets from Michaels. If the color you like is not available in self adhesive foam sheets you can use the regular foam sheets and stick them with glue.
Its best to cut the foam sheets using craft knife. I used Fiskars Fingertip Craft knife
Once the frame is ready the last step is to put the hanging cord. I used a beautiful cord I had kept from one of the gift bags received. You can use any other thick cord or ribbon for this purpose. Cut a piece of about 3inches. Now, on the back of the frame mark two points about 1.5 inches apart so that its the center of the frame. Place the cord there and fix it using tape. You can use scotch tape or double sided tape for this purpose. Michaels is a great place to shop for craft supplies. Usually the things that I use are the basic things you will need to make most of the crafts so its a good idea to have the various kinds of glues, ribbons, tapes in stock.
Once the cord is attached then you can hand the framed art to a place where its easily visible for your baby to look at and enjoy.
